Some type of tribal necklace?

This is a complete prayer putting this one up. Clearly I have no idea what this is, but I am hoping someone out there has seen something similar in form or knows about this type of necklace. It is old, it is very dirty, it smells and it looks old. Under high magnification it is clear that the small metal goldish piece where crimped by hand. It is not magnetic The leather is slimy and smelly.

I do not think this is modern, I have seen necklace with the shell like this one before. The patina on the metal makes me think otherwise. I found this is a grab bag of old jewelry. If you have a guess please feel free. Take care all!!!
