I just purchased this scroll and am looking for any help with any info on it . The scroll itself is 15 inched in width and 20 feet long ( not a typo 20 feet long ) . The images are of the first four sections that would fit in camera view finder . I took it to a local Asian restaurant as the owner is in his Mid 90's and he offered me 1000 for it but not for sale just trying to find history and value of it . Thanks for any help that anyone can be .
other than trying to buy it, did he say what it was?
The only info he gave me was that looked to be painted on rice paper and estimated that it was somewhere around 70 years old and that the writings going across the top were some type of poem and then very quickly offered me 1k for it . Sorry I could not be more helpfull .. I have no local Asian galleries to take it to....I live about one and a half hours from Balt/Wash. area . I may have to take a road trip lol
The first picture on the far left top vertical line is the date. It says Qianlong Emperor period (ie. 1735-1796) 3rd month of the year. Bottom line is the name of the person who apeears to be some government offical (surname 'Leung' )offering this writing/drawing scroll to the emperor to read.
This piece could be 16th century! I think it is worth e mailing Sotheby or Christies for confirmation.
George
Qianlong Emperor
???
The top 2 character = Qianlong
George , Just wanted to say thank you for the info and I wish you would have been able to see the complete scroll .I have contacted Sotheby's and have sent them pictures. I will try to keep you informed of the progress that we make... again, thank you for you info and knowledge of this, it is how we knew what to say to the auction houses...
No need to contact Sotheby's. Anyone with some knowledge about oriental art history would not do so. Just imagining one day you come across a "“Mona Lisa" in a local shop...
If someone offers you 1k for this SELL IT IMMEDIATELY!!!
This is a very poor copy/print made in the last 20 years of this famous painting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Along_the_River_During_the_Qingming_Festival
