I came by this in an estate sale today. It was with other blankets in a house that was upscale with moderately priced decorative art everywhere, sprinkled with exceptional old pieces of furniture, art, etc.
To me this shawl or blanket is handwoven of hand spun wool. The red decorative work is carefully done. It seems to be southwester, Hopi, Navaho, Pueblo ??? I suppose it could be Hindu, from India or the like.
The fringe is the warp twined and knotted. It is about 7x4 feet, fairly fine spun wool thread. The designs seem to be southwest but I am not able to find a comparable white blanket with the same designs. However, I do know they are old designs and authentic symbols. I think this blanket is fairly early, pre-1930s even.
Stunning!
