There are 2 different versions of this pocket watch, both produced by Ingersoll. The first version, shown on the left was met with disapproval from Eagle who commissioned the watch, because the wording "Ingersoll" was more prominent than the words "Dan Dare". A second production version has the word "Ingersoll" removed and "Dan Dare" larger.
Derek, a big cheer for solving the mystery. I often wonder which version came first! (The Jeff Arnold pocket watch also has 'Ingersoll' and 'non-Ingersoll' versions for probably the same reason as you have stated.) Fantastic pair of Dan Dare watches and a stunning box. Thank you for sharing!
I was so happy to find this article. I have a mint working watch of the second type, ie, without the Ingersoll logo. It is really very good, and has been safely in a box since I bought it in a vintage comic and collectable shop in Camden Passage in 1978. Because of this, the colours are unfaded and it looks much better than the one in the picture above
I would have liked to ebay it, but it was turned down because without Ingersoll on the face, they think it is a fake. They clearly did no research.
There is another site that is pontificating that only the Ingersoll logo examples are genuine.
I hate sloppy research
jbgnicestuff, Thank you for your comments, I have never heard of ebay turning down a listing :)
Is the box a Dan Dare box or the Ingersoll version ?
Derek
Hi Derek
Ebay initially accepted the listing but then removedbit for " copyright
infringement,
I think a buyer had complained, possibly one whose offer I had rejected
I have since found "my" watch on other sites
This does not excuse bad research as the background story is interesting
Sorry Derek
forgot to add that I do not have the box
I regret to a "box" rather than a Dan Dare box
