How did this work? any names of this?
The holes at the lower edge enabled a pouch to be sewn onto this device. When open your hand could fit through the opening into the pouch bag. The concertina movement closed, the top fitted over the mechanism to lock the bag pouch. The ring enabled you to hang it from the wrist I suppose.

My sister is a vintage purse collector and has a number of these with this type of enclosure. Both cloth and chain weave.
yes Amber a lot of these style purses are called beggars bags some of cloth,leather,and chainmail linkage it would hook onto the o loops, the top is called a gate . Whiting and Davis are usually amongst the more elite style of these fashionable wrist(gated bag) satchels and were usually silver or gold plated. Hope that helps. Michelle Renee' DuBois
