Pierre Perret hand-thrown art nouveau vase with reticulated handles and floral iris motif rendered cream on a dark red background. Fully signed underneath, "Pierre Perret, Vallauris," with his crossed P cipher. Dimensions: 6.5"(H) x 4"(W).

    --------------------

Pierre Perret worked for Jerome Massier at Vallauris. Jerome Massier pieces can be found with the forms signed by both artists. In 1898, Perret acquired the Massier firm, but he sold it in 1901 under the duress of bankruptcy, thus producing very few pieces under his name from 1989 - 1901. Jean-Baptiste Massier resumed the family's studio from Perret creditors in 1909. The whereabouts and activity of Perret after 1901 are still shrouded in mystery.

Pierre Perret is listed in the official ceramic entries of the Paris 1900 Exposition with the following information (poorly translated by me from the original French): "Mr. Perret is the successor of the last few years Mr. Jerome Massier, he has added, making pottery more or less similar to his predecessor, that of fine white earthenware, which allows it to carry other decorative effects. He makes earthenware decorated pieces using underglaze colors and transparent enamels. Presented a large vase decorated with violets; a green ornamental fountain; and a turquoise vase. Mr. Perret also exhibits a metallic lusterware, but it is not abused, which proves his good taste."
