Help. I broke my mother's doll head, about 1910-1920 era doll --my mother born in Iowa but very German family so maybe doll made in Germany. What is the head made of? Very thin head thickness (16 of inch)/, 2.1 inches in diameter, beige colored Inside and out) shoulder-type, molded short hair, painted eyes. Entire doll about 14 inches tall. Kid or oilcloth body, cloth legs and feet. Can anyone identify the material head is made of and/or where doll made? Can it be repaired/replaced? Any comments are welcome, I am extremely distraught.

Your doll head was made of heavy celluloid from what I can see . These dolls looked much like bisque dolls but they often broke very easy as they aged . I have one and just shipping it could cause it to crack . They were made in Germany . The head could be glued together but will never look good . You can buy a old head maybe on ebay . Sad it was broke but that is what that material does today . Have to be extra careful .
Here is an example . Does yours have glass or painted eyes ? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Celluloid-shoulder-head-doll-cloth-body-German-turtle-mark-21-boy-doll-/140985023941?pt=US_Dolls_Bears_Toys&hash=item20d35cbdc5

My doll is smaller than one of the ebay ones (mine is 13-14 inches) and about the same size as the other ebay one, style of hair is very similar. Mine has porcelain type hands. I think mine is intended to be female.

Does yours have a mark on back of head or her back shoulder plate ? If you search ebay daily you will find one . They do not sell high . Search this area
you can see her face better and oh the one that says a boy is a girl . Because of short hair they called it a boy :-)

Keep this link to watch for a head ok . Good luck I am sure you will find one just like you need in time . It is always hard when a family heirloom breaks :-(

This one is pretty nice because it has glass eyes which are always more desirable . measure how tall you head is from bottom of shoulder plate to top of head :-)

Thankyou for all the responses. I will continue to watch on ebay. One of the dolls currently on there is quite similar and I may decide on that one while I continue to watch for the "perfect match".
