Here is a small perfume bottle, that I have in my collection. It's 3.75" high and the bottom is 1.25" by 1.25" square, with a large, round polished pontil under the sterling. Unfortunately I do not have the original stopper. :( Now, the interesting part of this mystery. I tried to collect as many information on this small beauty as I could. My first thought was: This is a French (Daum?) cameo glass under the silver. With time, I started to drive my attention toward Bohemian origin. I knew, I saw this kind of decoration somewhere, so I entrenched myself in my reference books. I found out, Heinrich Hussmann made similar acid etched cameo decoration on heavy, Moser glass in the late 1920's. I could be absolutely wrong, but who knows? :) If someone has the book "Moser 1857-1997" by Mergl and Pánková, please take a look at the pictures in the page 125 and 126. I am really curious, whether I am the only person who can see similarities??? The only thing I am sure about, the sterling silver was applied in the United States. There is the stamp on the bottom: "STERLING". I am not able to look inside the bottle to see the color of the glass itself, or see any signature or maker's mark if existing at all. I do not even know, if it is cameo glass, covered with silver, or plain glass covered with textured silver. Anyway, I am puzzled with this piece... Help me pleeeeease! :)
Goldberg and bruder rachmann did work with glass covered in silver. I do not think the sterling mark means it was necessarily american applied. It just means it was required for import into america if applied elsewhere.
I highly doubt this is moser. have you tried sticking a pen light in there to get an idea of the glass itself?
Yes I tried everything, but I do not have as thin pen light as I need. The neck of the bottle is about 1/4" at the lower part, so no way to look inside. I think I need a special camera or something. :( Thank you for the information, regarding silver overlay.
