This small aluminum ship on a wood base was a souvenir piece from a US soldier that served in North Africa and Egypt during WW1.
The boat is very well articulated with aluminum sails and fine wire rigging.
The sail has an elephant and palm tree engraved along with what appears to be "Y3". I believe that the "Y3" represents "43" or 1943 the year of construction and the engraver was not that familiar with numbers. I have seen similar number errors in modern items that I have had made in the Middle East.
See my other postings for hundreds of trench art items from the Spanish American War to the modern era.
