Hello This is interesting and I will research this. 2 metal containers in old Japanese box? for? when? why? who made this? Any help appreciated, from local Goodwill. I like this box!! Thanks for looking!!! Don NOW the one box is sterling Jungin hallmark 1868-1912. And I think they are snuff boxes! Don
No polishing Don!
Why?
no polish? ok
Both look like mixed metals.
Let's see what the others say!
I don't know but I really love the look.
Thanks I am looking up Japanese sterling hallmarks!
Silver box is sterling Jungin Hallmark!!! Used from 1868-1912!!! I am happy now!!
Jungin is .925-1000!!
No polishing!
OK No polishing! There are two hallmarks on other box, but no Jungin, maybe brass? I weighed the silver box, it is 37 grams, the other box is 35.1 grams!
Probably same person donated this and egg from prior posting! Bought at same time same Goodwill!
With that patination ... I'd say copper.
Don't clean patination off.
The Japanese were experts at mixed metals: part of the sword manufacturing and decoration.
The birds on copper colored one are either gold or silver. they seek very different, thanks, no polishing!!
I think these are snuff boxes or pill boxes
These are "stress relievers" one held in each hand and kneaded. Most are in the form of a ball.
I do not think so, as they open up, you could put things inside, the sterling one and the other are too delicate to squeeze,.
lol...I love the advice you have received...sounds like my friends...don't clean it or polish it etc...supposed to look old if it is old ;) I agree and would guess they are for holding something...I had a little silver ring with Asian writing in it...when I was at my dentist I asked the girls to look at it and see if they could read it...turns out it was Chinese silver with maker's mark and feb. 29th inscribed...good luck in finding out what they are and what they are used for...thank you for sharing your great find!
Thanks! This is Jungin 1868-1912 The hallmark is very clear. And I believe they are snuff boxes! I saw similar on the internet, very valuable also. look up Japanese silver hallmarks and it is there! thanks!
I do not see them there? These are hallmarked with Jungin, the box they are in is very old? Do not understand? sorry, I tested the silver one and it is + for 925 or more
It is hard to see but I have a jewelers scope!
See if they can read the makers mark or sellers!
http://www.925-1000.com/foreign_marks2.html for hallmarks go to Japan
My ex-wife is Japanese and she was not familiar with jungin either

Takashimaya Co., Ltd. (??????? Kabushiki-gaisha Takashimaya?) (TYO: 8233) is a large Japanese department store chain.
Founded in 1829 in Kyoto by Iida Shinkichi as a retailer of used clothing and cotton cloth, the store now has outlets throughout Japan and also in Taipei, Paris a
Well I bought it and the Jade egg, from the Goodwill, Much less than $45.00 for both.
This department store has always provided stiff competition for Mitsukoshi, with a history just as long. It was founded as a kimono shop in Kyoto during the Edo Period and opened in Tokyo in 1933. Today it's one of the city's most attractive department stores, with a Renaissance-style building and gloved elevator operators whisking customers to eight floors of shopping and dining. Naturally, it features boutiques by such famous designers as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Issey Miyake, and more. Its sale of used kimono (look for advertisements in the Japan Times) draws huge crowds, even more than the usual 35,000 daily customers. Open daily 10am to 8pm.
