My mother-in-law was a fantastic investigator of all things and could find out what things were in the age before the internet! Alas, even with the internet, I am having difficulty figuring out how to find out what the backstamp says on this teaset!
There are a teapot, creamer, sugar bowl, 6 cups and saucers and a tray. They all are marked on the bottom in Chinese (?), which I don't read. Then there is the pattern. How to find out what it is? And then, how old it is?
Thoughts? Direction? Thank you all in advance!

Looks like Arita (Imari) style design,but that mark is...odd. The "n" looking symbol is Kyu/Ku (number 9), the "U" is Hi (hee) but upside down and the cursive "L" looks a lot like the modifier that makes Hi into Hyo, but it's sideways. Add to that,the Ku is in kanji script and the Hyo in hiragana. @_@;;
So, Hyo-Kyu? Kyu-Hyo? Hyoku could be a first name...

You're looking at it sideways there. Its written in hiragana and consists of "sa" which is ?, "tsu" which is ?, and "ma" which is ?. Satsuma. But I see how you got that, the ? does look like ? and the ? would then look like ? if you're looking at it sideways
Stillwater,you are absolutely correct, that's what I get for reading bad handwriting so late. Looking at the teapot, the tsu looked like a 3 stroke hi and the ma is missing the 2nd horizontal stroke making it look like a scribbled yo.
If I muck up that bad again, you have permission to lob a brick at my head >_<;;
Lol I can see how you got that though. If you have an interest in Japanese, here's a fantastic way to learn kana. I struggled with it for a few months and when I used mnemonics, I had them both memorized in about 2-3 days
