Hello, I found this in my grandfather’s belongings. At first I almost passed it off and threw away the packing and kept the coin. But then I thought it was very interesting and though that it may be something a Time Magazine collector may want. Does anyone have any information on this piece and know if it would be an item collectors would be interested in? Or is it just trash? I appreciate all your help thanks.

      Mustangtony,

Thanks for your response. You are correct the coin is a Morgan. It is a 1882 O. The brochure does not have a date, just the Time Magazine name and address on the back of 20 Rockefeller Center. Although the date on the Morgan pictured on the front is 1909. So, not sure if that was time that these were sent out or just an arbitrary date. Again thank you for your help

      Mustangtony,

Thanks for the additional pieces to the puzzle.

The date clue you provided lines up with what I was thinking as well. Most of the coins my grandfather obtained were in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Also he worked for a New York Life branch in North Dakota for 50 years. So I would guess that it might be an advertising piece that was given to him as a New York Life representative.

The coin is just pressure fitted in to the brochure (like a Whitman coin book) it is not taped and does not have a plastic cover (hence the beautiful toning of the coin). when I looked at the mintmark it was prominently an "O". So I don't think it is a O/S variation.

I have done a bunch of research on the internet regarding the item and have not been able to find anything similar. So going back to the collectability of the item, I am not at all familiar with collecting habits or desires. So, I have two view points and I'm not sure which is correct. On one hand, since this is not a TIME cover and I have not been able to find any info on a marketing item like this. I could see this as an item that a collector would not be interested in. But on the other hand I am a person that has always been interested in things that no one else has, so if collectors are anything like myself this item may be highly desirable as it doesn’t seem prominently available.

Any thoughts/discussion that you or anyone has on the desirability of the item or my views above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Again, thanks for your comments. I checked the address and there is no zip code. So, I would agree it is probably from the 50s.
