WW1 saw a rise in popularity of wrist watches. It was much more practical for a soldier to wear his timepiece on his wrist.
This AZO RPPC shows an early adaptation. A leather band and partial case (showing the dial) was used to wear a pocket watch on the wrist.
The soldier wears signal corps branch insignia on his collar.
