I picked this up at a yard sale. The elderly woman told me that it was an antique. She has had it for years and got it from her aunts house that had also had it for years. It looks like a old school bench from "The Little House on the Prairie" days. Lol
It has an open up seat for storage and a wooden pencil holder on the right side.

This looks exactly like the short part of a 3 piece section wall-hugging dining unit--sometimes called a dining nook. I still have mine and it is identical to yours. I also have a longer identical piece as well and a small triangular piece that serves as the connector (it fits in the corner). The benches both lift up for storage inside--no storage in the connector. Here is a similar (different brand) one I found on ebay so you can see how the parts fit together.
