Found this trunk today and fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. It's large - 39 inches wide. It appears to be covered in deer hide but could be some other type of hide. The inside is covered in fabric with a pretty elaborate pattern on it. The trunk was bought in Massachusetts near Brimfield and brought back to Kentucky where I bought it. There are some spots on the top where someone wrote a name at some point and someone tried to remove it and where someone sat something that made circles. I love the large metal locks on the front. I'm not sure how old it is?

Fabulous trunk, probably dates from around 1800 to 1840 if we go by style and material used around that time. (however those latches seem quite unusual and may date this a little earlier) It also seems a little larger than normal for the time. Beautiful trunk -- thanks for the post!
