I guess this is how children used to entertain themselves long before television. The first image is from 1900, the second 1875

LOVE IT!!!! SpunkysMom!!!
probably more than just children. Adults didn't have much in the way of after-work entertainment either. Hard to even imagine today & maybe why the birth rate was so high, but don't know the excuse for it now.
Thanks, SEAN & blunderbuss! You're right, blunder, but boy how times have changed!
The stereoscope was actually designed for adults. It's the precursor to the view master, which after a few decades was finally cheaply produced enough to be considered a children's toy. The stereoscope, though, was to be viewed with the device and have the appearance of 3-D, transporting the user to foreign lands on a "budget." When these first came out, it was treasured in the home library and a large collection was something to be admired. Good find! Interesting slides.
