    Imperial German mint pottery Reservist's stein that belonged to Uhlan Gefreiter Grolzmann who served from 1905 to 1908. Lance corporal Grolzmann served in the Ulan regiment "King Karl" 1st Wurttemberg Number 19, 4th Squadron garrisoned in Ulm and Wiblingen. This regiment was raised in 1683 and makes it the oldest Cavalry regiment. The stein was produced by Merkelbach & Wick, and bears their trademark incised into the bottom of the stein. The roster on this rare pottery stein is short, only 29 strong. It is very legible with no fading. The pewter strap is tight to the handle with no movement. The finial is an Uhlan at full gallop on his trusty steed leaping a fence row. The only thing missing from the finial is the regimental lance. A small thing on a stein that is over 100 years old. The left side scene shows a company of charging Uhlans at full gallop charging towards the enemy. The bottom scene shows a scouting party on patrol. The center scene shows an Uhlan astride his horse with the regimental Kaserne behind him. Below is King Wilhelm the 2nd who reigned from 1891-1918. Flanking him are the regimental cypher and the shield of the Kingdom of Wurttemberg. The right scene on the stein shows an Uhlan bidding his "madchen" farewell as the bugler blows his trumpet. The lower scene, a skirmish line of Uhlans. Inside the stein is an old paper sticker with what I believe was the original price of this rare piece. The stein doesn't contain any cracks, chips, or damage.

    Es lebe Hoch die cavalleie

    (Here's to the cavalry.)

    Wenn Ulanen patroullieren und den starksten Feind aufspuren.

    (When Uhlan patrol they seek out the strongest enemy.)

    Die trompete ruft zum Scheiden. Drum, mein Madchen, lebe wohl.

    (The bugle blows and therefore my dear girl we must part.)

    So Lang ich lebe werd ich nie vergessen. Ich bin ein lanzen-reiter
    beuitchen cavallerie..
    (As long as I live I will never forget I'm a lancer in the beautiful cavalry.)

      Love the stein by itself, but I can’t resist linking it to my own 1908 dated Württemberg Uhlan photograph. It’s interesting to compare the uniforms:

      5-24-2014 Dear BlueMax1914, I have a Wurttemberg Uhlan 19th Regiment uniform & tschapka mannequin. I would be very interested in purchasing this Regimental Stein (or one like it). Please contact me - I'm actually only one State over from you. Thank you. gljplc

      gljplc;

      It is very difficult to find uhlan steins made of pottery. Most that I have seen are porcelain, and that, and other attractive elements of this stein make me loathe to sell it. Perhaps a trade if you should acquire a machine-gun unit stein. Thank you for your interest. You should post pictures of your uhlan outfit.
