Cameo glass vase. Signed, "Art" in cameo script. The huge Lexicon of glass signatures book includes this signature and suggests it is likely from the 1920's, and possibly French or Bohemian in origin. It even suggests it may have been made by Lotz. The underside looks to have "honest" wear.

I still consider this an unknown, and would love to know something more definitive about the maker.

can we see a pic of the base?

I have also read that this signature is attributed to Loetz, and my first impression was Bohemian or French (before I read your post). I think this might be part of Loetz cameo, like Richard (similar quality) but the colors and design are more typical of glass made in Nancy. An enigma. Very nice piece!

      I am not thinking Loetz...

If my suspicions are correct the base of this will have a very definite look which is why I'd like to see a pic of the base.

ah it's not the way I was expecting to see it finished. It's not a shoe in for what I thought it was.

I agree with the bohemian or french train of thought. I realllly love it what ever it is.

poking around this exact shape was used by D'argental rather frequently...
    7. twentiethc, 11 years ago
Thanks Greatsnowyowl, I see what you mean by the shape. That's an excellent observation. D'Argental's cameo technique is very similar as well. Even their signature has he same angular line under it. I'll certainly continue to explore that possibility.

sadly the base makes it a no for D'Argental the colorway is also not quite right for D'Argental.
    9. twentiethc, 11 years ago
Thanks manddmoir. I have since found another reference to the "Art" signature in an older French cameo art glass book. It supported other thoughts that it was from the 1920's but did not give any further information. The book included a picture of a very similar vase. So, the general consensus seems to be French, and from the 1920s so far.

Its lovely however old it is.

The shape, the decor and the type of manufacturing is typical for Arsall,
a German factory: Lausitzer Glaswerke, Weiswasser , made in about 1920,
      today worth about 600-900 Euros
    12. twentiethc, 11 years ago
Kairomalte, thanks for the input. I agree ... Arsall and D'Argental seem to be the most likely makers based on shape, colors, technique. Do you know is Arsall used other signatures or maybe did commission work for other designers?

If anyone is still following this - how tall is this vase?
    15. twentiethc, 8 years ago
I do not have the vase in front of me at the moment, but I believe the height to be in the 11" to 13" type range.

3 years ago I didn't' see what I see now. LOL. I see where you were going with this one Warren. it has a loetz colorway doesn't it. the arsall and d'argental pieces had a very very similar look to loetz of the same period. I'm now on the side of probably Loetz. (or harrach ) but probably loetz.... I found another one that really has a loetz look. https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/44807303_pr-cameo-glass-vases-with-flowers-signed-art

We have two antique black on red cameo vases, both signed "Aida," with only one also showing "art." Anyone have any more information on these?
    18. Greatsnowyowl Greatsnowyowl, 8 years ago
unless it says only art like shown here it's not the same thing.
    19. Greatsnowyowl Greatsnowyowl, 8 years ago
@dasullywon what source said this signature could be attributed to loetz?

    21. gcabana, 8 years ago
One does say "art" like it says there, the other does not. Both say "Aida" on them as well.
    22. Greatsnowyowl Greatsnowyowl, 8 years ago
have to see a picture of it you should start your own story about it. my gut is that if it says something else it's not the same. the word art is included on many things in conjunction with another word.
    23. costamar, 8 years ago
I believe that IT IS LOETZ.
Check pls a similar vase, properly signed, that I auctioned in CATAWIKI recently.
