4" x 1.25" x 6" Salesman Sample fence stay used to brace the wires between fence posts. It is the most popular stay in use today.
Patented November 21, 1905, patent #805,071 by Robert L. Horsley of Fort Worth, Texas.
This model represents an improved design patent no. 820,870, May 15, 1906. Molded into the base is "The Cinch Stay Manufactured by Worth Wire Works, Kokomo, Indiana".
Before and after: It cleaned up real nice.
Very interesting item, especially for an Australian scientist studying rural fences internationally. I would like to contact you for further information about the sample and Cinch Fence Stays. From my field work studying rural fences in the US, I recorded that the stay is dominant in the southern states (and probably the rest) of the US, but is quite uncommon here in Australia. We have a few patents for the same stay (locally called "droppers") dating from 1927 10 1996, and it was sold here in the 1930s as the Acme Dropper. I would like to use the image of the salesman sample to illustrate a paper I am writing comparing rural fences in Australia and the USA.
Thanks, John
Hi John,
Thanks for your interest in my fence stay salesman sample. I won it on a EBay auction. I'm afraid that this is the extent of my knowledge about the Cinch stay. You are certainly welcome to use the image. I love to share my passion. Good luck with your endeavor.
Thanks Gatekeeper, I appreciate your courtesy. However, I would really like to be able to thank you in the paper using your real name rather than the CW username. Can you contact me off-list please: john.pickard@bigpond.com.
