Hi everyone. I have been away from CW for awhile, due to a very long move. Only a mile down the road, but a lot of work! Anyway, I found these disgusting things in my new backyard. I had some free time so I started poking around with the metal detector, and this is what I came up with. I have no idea if these are "collectibles" or "antiques" but I figured many people on CW know a lot about many things! All I can say is that these are both cast iron, found about a yard apart, and maybe 6 inches underground. They are VERY VERY heavy, about 50 pounds each. The long piece is about 15 inches in length and the rounder piece is 8 or 10 inches. I have a few guesses, but I will withhold them to see what comes up. Thanks!!!!

Agreed. That spin looking thing has got a memory somewhere...I sell industrial equipment so when I get home from vaca, I'll show it to some of my pump guys...if not solved.

Hi BHock45 glad your move is over & settling down again I would love a metal detector but in thinking of your picture I thought maybe the long 1 may be a piston rod of some sort. Then I could be Wright off the track.

I believe that they are part of a stove, part of the shaker grate.

Could be from a coal furnace as well considering it's size.

You're most welcome BHock & I hope you're enjoying your new home!
I'm just guessing, but perhaps late 1800's to mid 1900's.

      OK then. Option two.

A bank of teeth from a nut crusher.

My original thought was car until I read the dimensions again and counted the odd number on the shaft. The weight you say they are makes me think they were built to with stand heat, pressure or both. I would hope someone collects them because in that condition the scrap yard will laugh :)
