Wood carvings of an elderly couple in our collection. While trying to find out some background on them I found a very similar, but more basic version of the same couple. Maybe an earlier example by the same artist, or maybe his apprentice?

Beautiful carving on YOUR examples-- great patina on the wood that appears to have a lot of age. Can you post a photo of the bottom of yours to confirm?

I don't see the same age or quality in photo #4-- the age looks like stain rather than age patina. I'd say they are much later than your examples.

Scottvez I added a photo of one of the bottoms, thanks again for your help

It appears to have age, but the lighting/ focus is not very good.

If you can replicate the lighting and focus from photo #2 a better determination may be possible.

Scottvez is this a little better?
    10. scottvez scottvez, 11 years ago
yes-- it does look like true age (to me). The grain is just not what I was expecting.

      What were you expecting?
    12. scottvez scottvez, 11 years ago
The grain is not as visible as I was expecting and I am confusing the cut marks with grain!

Just saw your listing as I was researching 2 busts I just found while treasure hunting in the thrift stores in my area. My man bust actually has "J.ALBERDI" stamped into the wood side where his left shoulder is, and is definitely carved wood (he is missing his pipe, however, along with the "loop" atop his hat). My opinion of your bust is that the pipe is not original. Interestingly, my woman bust does not have the same "J.ALBERDI" stamped into the wood that I can see, but matches the workmanship and look of the other bust!?! Regardless, I believe both pieces are by Alberdi, but this pair also appears to be a "common" set available on the internet. I also found 2 figurines at the same thrift store that both share "J.ALBERDI" stamped into their wood bases. Not sure how I might be able to confirm authenticity, but feel I had a good day today! Do either of your busts have "J.ALBERDI" stamped into the wood around their bases?

Ok so i have the complete man and stamped woman busts plus the somewhat matching wall plates that are also stamped i am interested to know the value of these items ?
