I had to have this when I saw it ! Not having enough money, I asked them to hold it, which to my surprise they did. After all I am their best customer. It looks really old but beside that it is a very nice painting. The ship has incredible detail and while a bit dirty..ok a lot dirty nothing is obscured. If it were cleaned, and it actually photographed a lot brighter than it really is, it would look amazing. The other thing is someone has taken it off it's stretcher and wrapped it around what looks like a board of mahogany veneer that was the right size and tacked it in place. So this may also not be the original frame.the canvas was probably an odd size. Looks like 21 x 17 but the picture doesn't seem damaged by doing this. This probably kept it from being torn or punctured over the years. You can see the stretcher outline on one side of the front in the sky area. There is a bit of scratching on the clouds but I think it's in the dirt not the paint. The signature is just unclear enough that I'm not 100% sure what the artist's name is. It looks like Norm Waters or Wanters or maybe it's not a name and says Nor' Wester. I really don't know. Haven't found anything online yet no matter what I search. -Mike-

LMAO! I know that feeling. I finally got to get my brand new John Deere out today and went to town for gas. Had to stop by grandmas attic before I came back to the country:))) now I have a vase/urn I posted that is yet another mystery. Looks like Gonder to me but think only rum rill is only unmarked, not sure.

Since you mentioned Rumrill. I still haven't ID that red ring handled vase I found at the Cleveland GW. It looks Asian but that flat bottom doesn't fit. I wonder if it's Rumrill, North Carolina J.B. Cole they did ring handles

I went to Pat Catan's because I wanted to put this painting back on a wood stretcher. They were out of the size bars I needed but it was actually cheaper to buy a whole canvas and remove the canvas for the stretcher. It really needed to be off that old board someone had tacked it too. Thank God they didn't glue it ! Don't know why it was removed from it's original stretcher in the first place. It was tacked on the edges originally you can see the holes.I saved and used the original tacks and put them back in the same holes. Looks much better and I got rid of a lot of dirt and spider egg cases on the back. Must have been in an attic or garage for a long time. Much nicer and cleaner now. The painting still needs a good cleaning but I would leave that to a professional.

I found online images of paintings similar to this one. They appear to have been popular from the 1920's thru the 50's. A couple even have this same type oak frame. I would say this one probably dates from the 1930's. Still can't track down the name of this talented artist.

can u make out the name of the ship ..Mike...?
    15. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Unfortunately there isn't one. There's just some gold decoration on the bow and the stern. It would be great to know but I guess it will remain a mystery.

you could contact the navy historical division...bet they could come up with the type of ship and maybe go from there.. who made it might lead to who bought them ... who knows...lol

You don't see colored tall ships in painting's very often. Very nice. My wife cringes every time I see anything with a mast. Lol .

Thanks Caper...The green and red hull is unusual. Wish I could ID the ship and decipher the artist's signature. It is very well done. This one needed a new stretcher. As you can see it was folded around a piece of board when I bought. It fit to the new stretcher exactly. I even used the same tacks put back in the original holes too. You could clearly see that it had been on one originally but I don't know why it was taken off. It's much happier now that the canvas can breath properly. :)
