    (53 items)

Full size trunk (32 X 23) that opens from the lower part of the front upwards. There are places for three drawers on the inside two are missing. Has heavy canvas like material on the outside with wooden slats with metal ends. Don't see a makers mark. Looking for information on age, maker etc. Think it is called a dresser trunk but not sure.

I have been waiting a long while for one of these to show up! One of the few still missing from my personal collection -- just do not come across them. Yes definitely a lovely dresser trunk from around 1900's. In the three years that I have been collecting I have seen two up for grabs (not on ebay though) and only one was nice like yours. They were more expensive to produce and I guess the form and style never really caught on so there seems to be few out there. Too bad about the missing drawers, but they can easily become a shelf. I do know of a company that made them so I will look it up and get back to you, but they may not have made this one, as there were a few companies that did not label their trunks that made this type and only a label would give you a definitive answer. There are some other trunk experts out there who could fill us in a bit more and I hope they come across the post because I would love to learn more about this kind of trunk myself. Thanks you so much for the post -- gives me new hope!!!

WOW! I have never seen one of these. Can you post a few more shot s of the look of opening from the side. I am having trouble understanding how this looks. Why is it called a dresser trunk? Was it intended to sit on top of soemthing to be opened?
      Thanks

Hi - added a picture that shows the trunk from the side when it is opened. I lifts from the front near the bottom of the trunk, it rests on top of the other section when opened. I'm restoring for my collection leaving mostly as is cleaning the wood, replacing the handles and will strip the paper from the interior. This is the first one I've seen, I've only see pictures so there are not many of these around. I was lucky to find one it was worth the 3 hours round trip ride to pick it up. I think the name comes from the fact that there should be 3 drawers inside so it functions like a dresser - two drawers missing on this one. I have to make replacements or some sort of shelves. Trunkman thanks for the information

My pleasure -- very glad to hear that I am not the only one willing to go on a 3 hour "trunk run" (as it is affectionately called in my home) when a rare beauty comes up. You have stirred my curiosity -- what other trunks do you have? Post away and welcome to CW.
