    Please forgive me I may have posted this before. I do love this bowl, not a wonderful buy, but an interesting item nonetheless. The metal bands show a wonderful patina, but may have been reattached with new nails. Cannot make out the joinery used but this is certainly unique. The wood looks old and hand sawn. Is this a lotus in the middle? I am hoping someone recognizes the type of wood or the design in the middle. THanks!!!!

      Chinese? Looks similar in construction to the ubiquitous Chinese stands for pots ... but the dish shape is really unusual.

      Hello vetraio, hope all is well. I agree it is very very unusual. Each "section" is a separate piece being held together somewhere.....lol.

      Possibly cherry, segmented turned bowl. The pieces of wood are fitted & glued up then turned. Cherry gets darker with age.
      Here is a link to the process, scroll a third of the way down the page;

      Someone had solved this mystery item, but it looks like the comment is gone. I believe it is a Chinese or Japanese rice mixing bowl???? Does anyone remember exactly what this is? THank you for the help.
