I just got this, a beautiful wedding jug made by Catawba Native American Sara Ayers. This was an estate piece, Ayers made this in 1979 for a woman named Sarah Grant from Ohio and I bought it from the estate. It stands at 6 1/4 inches high and is signed on the bottom by Ayers. It is absolutely perfect, with no chips or hairline cracks.
Sara Ayers (1919-2002) was a master potter for the Catawba Native American tribe. Sara was born on a native reservation near Rock Hill, SC. She later moved to West Columbia SC and with her husband Foxx began to make pottery, made with clay she dug out herself. The Catawba pottery is well known for it's cream coloring, along with the black and sometimes orange/reds. Her pottery is in many museums and is highly sought after by collectors. I am happy to have this piece in my collection.
Enjoy the pics :)
