I have this carved wood Black man that I purchased about 5 years ago. He weights about 60lbs and sits 33" tall. He has a lot of details carved into him from his eyes, fingernails, hair and shoes. There's a hole between his knees that served a purpose, I am not sure what? There's 3 initials carved on the bottom of his shoes "K S Y". Any information would be great!

I will look into this one, Savoy give this one a go when you see it. The hole however was for a fishing pole, old fellow is sitting in a chair fishing. Dave

Here is a site for woodcarving that might be able to identify the artist. It truly is a magnificant piece. Much of the carved art you see today is more toward tribal art. The subject is clearly African American, and exceptionally well done. Did you find that chair for him or is that part of the art? Just an amazing piece. What part of the country did you acquire him? THANKS for posting.

      Thanks,

I thought the hole might have held a hitching ring for a horse, maybe he sat on a pourch of an estate? His outfit is a suit and tie with dress shoes?

Nothing unusual about dressing like that for fishing, not if you lived on the water. Chairs on great estates were much grander then what he is sitting on. I think he is fishing too :)

I am not convinced that he is fishing. It seems to me that if that were the case, the space between the knees would be behind the hands and not in front. The clothing seems off to me as well. In my opinion, it appears as if he was sitting for a portrait, or perhaps the artist created a wooden rendering of a photograph. The depression or space between his knees may be simply a consequence of the pose and well detailed carving. Just a thought. I love this piece.

Thanks for all the inforamtion. I do not believe the chair is original to him, it just fits his size. I am in the North GA area near TENN and NC. I purchased it from a dealer here.

really wouldn't say he's fishing as the hands are to relaxed and would be carved as if holding a rod, great piece cant waitto see what you find out about him
