We found these on a curb, on a Sunday morning, in Crystal, MN. We liked them right away, which is why we picked them up. We really wanted them to sell them. I didn't realize it was going to be so difficult to identify them. Even an appraiser couldn't tell me who made them.
This set includes, what I think is called a Tall Boy and a Short Boy.
The only marks on the tall boy are 220, 33 and 41. There is also a mark, 220 1/2 on the short boy.
The measurements of the tall boy are:
Tall dresser is 34" W X 49" H X 18 1/2" D.
The measurements of the short boy are:
Low dresser is 44" W X 36" H X 19" D
Mirror is 26.5 W X 39 1/4 H
The short boy has a mirror has a propeller at the top and wood wheels on the bottom, and the bottom two drawers has propellers also. The tall boy also has propeller handles on the two bottom drawers. That is why I call it an Aviation set.
Some research turned up furniture, made in the 50's, for children, by a company called, Virginia House Maple Rock. These were the closest to depict what we have. I found a western suite and a ship set. I read there was an airplane set, but I never could find any pictures of it to, possibly, identify it that way. Virginia House Maple Rock always emblazoned their Logo on one drawer. Nothing like that is on either dresser. Since they don't have any logo on them, I don't know who made these.
Thanks for helping me identify them.
Lovely! Welcome to CW!
Hi there, Just a heads up: if you are planning to sell them, you must delete them from Show & Tell - part of our rules and regulations. Lovely set!
Well. We have talked about it and thought they would be great in our bedroom. So we are still in the decision stage. Besides, I am not trying to sell them here. I really want to know who made them and what they are called. I am a curious sort. Thanks.
I also meant to ask if you'd looked under the drawers (or on the bottom) for a furniture seal or stamp? Sometimes companies mark their work in pretty hidden spots... :)
Hunter, We took out all the drawers and looked underneath and on the sides of them. Nothing. We also tipped them to look underneath the dressers. There wasn't anything there either. The only marks we found, like I said, are the nos. Three are on the Tall Boy (is that the right description?) and one on the Short Boy.
PhilDavid, do you recall the name of the person or how you found that information? I never did find anything about them or him. I think the key word may be carved. I will check that out, and let you all know if I learn anything.
I do have to tell you, though, this may be my last day, on the internet, for awhile. I may be shut off tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. I still have stuff to sell.
Thanks for all your help. I really believe we will find out about these dressers.
Things turned out well for me. So I am still on-line and still searching for info.
