Anyone have a clue what these are used for? I've had them for a while and always tried to wonder about them. Maybe for pouring salt in an open wound? Nah... Salt cellars? Spoon rests?

I found the same thing under "spoon rest sterling" on Google, but I do see those on Replacements as ashtrays. Why would there be a set of 12 ashtrays?? It seems more likely that there would be a set of 12 spoon rests for a dinner service, you know?

Imagine a dinner/cocktail party mid century, everyone smoked & you either stood around one large astray or used an individual ashtray.
If you do a search for individual ashtrays or individual ashtray sets you will find them in glass, china, silver & in sets with holders.

      Thoughts?

Hmm I see ones made of different materials, but they all have the little ledge for the cigarette to rest on that keeps the cherry from touching anything. And plus, people didn't smoke cigarettes when these were made, they smoked pipes. They're not tarnished either, and sterling ashtrays terribly bad. I think they are spoon rests, and they got monogrammed with the rest of the flatware.

      You've determined the age?

The box of flatware had the old monogram order in the bottom, it was in 19-oh-something
