Someone was throwing this out and my 5 and 7 year old boys LOVE Pirates so I picked it. A friend said it looked really old possibly 1800's. I know NOTHING about it. Anyone have any info on this super cool find?
It's a little over 3ft long and a little over 2ft wide. There is a lot of metal and it smells like moth balls :-)

Nice find, it's a wonder Trunkman didn't beat you to it :-) !
I'm sure he'll be along shortly to fill you in on what you have found.

Fabulous monitor trunk from around late 1890's. Walksoftly was right -- you beat me to it -- I have a few curb finds of my own but this is as nice as any of mine. Please be careful with the kids because those lids are heavy and or course you do not want them playing inside them. Without a label you will be hard pressed to find out much else about this particular trunk -- there were many makers with similar styled trunks at the time. Its a great find and this one has a really good look to it. Welcome aboard Collectors weekly -- AARRGGGHHH!

1890's how cool!!!!! Any idea if it's worth any $ Maybe I won't keep it for the boys :-) Trunkman, it is very heavy and I was thinking it might be a little dangerous for those little hands. Also, and suggestions on how to get rid of the moth ball smell? It's airing in my garage right now but it's been 100 degrees for the past week here in NJ so there is no air to air it out in.

after washing the inside with mild soap water, there are a few tips I have heard. As you say, sunshine and fresh air, or bowls of vinegar in the trunk with the top shut, or dryer sheets, leave the lid closed for a few days, or kitty litter same precess, or shellac will seal out/ in the odor. I love your trunk and I wish I had gotten there before you! Have fun.

Another way to remove the mothball smell is with "activated charcoal", it's available in pet stores for aquarium filters & for pet odors.
      Good luck!
