My final entry for the day... This huge 24" x 10" dia. Famille Rose with a "mille fleur" pattern floor vase. It's beautifully hand painted on a black ground and covered in peonies. Some of the flowers are even outlined in raised gilt. It's just amazing to look at. Not a nick, chip or crack either. The only mark on the bottom is what looks like a raised " IA". Seems to be a decorator piece from Hong Kong or Macao but even so I doubt it was very cheap. The quality of the painting is exceptional.

Hey you :) It was the Japanese woodblock Iris print I found along with this vase.

Hi Jay.. I've noticed that too,but sometimes it's just anomalies in the firing residue. The "I" or line could be the number one but it also means "together" and "want" in Mandarin. and the "A" could be a Chinese character for the number eight which also sounds similar to their words "fortune, prosper, and wealth" It takes a real expert to figure these pieces out. Sometimes the marks are like titles or the artist's imagery of how you feel when you look at the piece. It would be nice to know if this were really valuable or just a modern reproduction. Either way it's awesome !

I put the vase on Asian Art .com's forum. A gentlemen told me that large highly decorative vases like this one date from probably the 3rd quarter of the 20th century coming from either Hong Kong or Macao. The gilding is what was the deciding factor as to the date. Plus he explained to me why it's famille rose and not famille noire using the New York Metropolitan Museum definitions. That was really interesting and the mystery is solved. Maybe worth a hundred or so at auction. Good investment, but it's a keeper :)

Thanks for the"loves" everyone. Actually this piece was packed away for many years and I just recently unpacked it. Still as eye catching as the day I bought it. :)
