I found this at an estate a long time ago, posted it on a straight razor forum but no one had seen anything like it before.
The blade is an 8/8" and about 1/4" thick! The photos don't do justice to its size, it is more of a folding meat cleaver than a razor. The interesting thing is that it looks like a "hobby piece" made in a guy's garage. The blade appears to be hand-wrought, a one-off, and the scale was shaped from a solid block of aluminum. I believe the case to be original, since it fits exactly perfect inside. If it wasn't for that case, I would think that it would be a display piece, but the case makes me think it was intended for use.
Does anyone have any ideas or guesses? The only thing I could think is that it was for veterinary use, maybe for shaving large animals for surgery?? There is no way that it was intended for human usage.
Hmmm I looked up hide scrapers, it looks like those tools require a firm grip, many have two handles, but you can only get a light grip on a straight razor like this
