The box fabrication is done. I added caster wheels that screw on/off depending on how you want it because of the weight. The insulation added a lot of weight. the inside of the tank looks ugly now but a nice coat of paint later will fix that. Now to the lid. I'm still up in the air about trying to save this one or buying a reproduction. I have very little left to work with. I would appreciate opinion on this.
I like that he is restoring it, otherwise it will rust away & be lost forever. I preserve restore & saved, to gone forever. Keep us up to date.
@TGBWC I can totally respect your opinion, and there are a lot that agree with you. I hope you look at the very first post and read its "possible" story and enjoy it. But the cooler needed saving so that someday in another 65 years someone else will say "that would make a cool planter".
Great job-- agree with buss on the restoration.
I think that you have saved the history of the object. I don't think a rusting planter in the yard would have done anything to preserve the objects history.

I see both sides but not radical on either. I don't clean old coins but if I see finger print surface on a gun, I will certainly clean it off with an oily rag.
I think it comes down to what you have to start with.
If you have a functioning item, then I would say "less is more" and minimal restoration is the route to go. If you start with a non- functional, rusting piece of yard art, then a more agressive approach may be in order.

Dont mean to take sides, but Ray, didn't you restore a cooler at one point in time? I remember one of your posts having a restored cooler table ( http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/38955-rays-coke-room ) seen in picture four....... I understand what you mean by removing all the history, but in this case I really think its better off restored than a planter rusting away......
MGRetro I think what your doing is fine (for this cooler only because how far gone it is) if you still have not decided about the lid, you could put a table top on it and use her as a table lol, got that idea from Ray.
As a collector, I don't buy restored pieces. But I respect hard work and admire talent. Two qualities you are displaying with this project. Much like an artist, you've created something from next to nothing. I look forward to seeing the finished piece. Nice job so far.
Those are my true feelings. I'll send you some Zantac express mail.
@buss scott trevor 50s and no$$, thank you and TGBWC, thank you as well. Though you're a grumpy one. I think all of you are right to an extent and TGBWC I did want all opinions. Good or negative they are all important to me. The next update (part 9) is for TGBWC.
I like your cooler.
Btw, this cooler would look awsome on top that cooler table thing TGBWC! That is a cool piece and collection man.
