This Elgin was my grandfather's, if not my great grandfather's. I just know it is very old and is numbered 78082. It's been kept in a protective box and is in excellent condition. I would love to know how old it is and any other info I can find out about it.

The number you stated is on the case. In order to date your watch we need the serial number off the watch movement.
