We found these leather belts at a garage sales and found them rather interesting. There are no maker marks or any type of information. We are curious to find out what they are. The "U" is made up of several layers of thin leather.

I am going to throw caution to the wind and guess at this. I have never seen this exact item but have seen similar ones long ago. I notice the waist belt is very thin compared to what you refer to as the U. Long ago I watched lumberjacks climb a tree with a double bitted axe to top out trees. They wore a similar belt to this. The axe was razor sharp so would cut through a single strand of leather quickly. Keeping the axe in place while climbing was also an issue, hence the thick leather U and the flap behind it to trap it and keep it from falling out during the climb. I could be way off base but that is what this reminds me of.
