As promised, I am uploading some unique ABCG items that we have collected over the many years of Antiquing. I mention "unique", not because there aren't other beautiful examples of GUNDY-CLAPPERTON Co. items, but because we always only collected perfect undamaged "museum quality" examples. This tall compote is one of the best examples we have ever seen.
C.H.Clapperton was an apprentice with Libbey Glass Company for ten years before coming to Canada to work at Gowens, Kent & Co, Ltd. (another Glass Cutting House) in Toronto and later opening his Cutting Shop at 61 Albert Street in Toronto, Canada circa 1905. His wonderful work displays the strong influences of his years at Libbey. He was joined in the business by N.F.Gundy in 1906 and they operated under GUNDY-CLAPPERTON until 1920.
Their Quality lead glass blanks were supplied by American Companies like Libbey Glass Co. of Toledo, Ohio, O.C.Dorflinger & Sons of White Mills, Pa, Mt. Washington Glass Co. of New Bedford, Mass. and European Glass Companies like Val St. Lambert of Belgium and Baccarat of France.
Their Trademark Logo was not always applied on their products but the early Acid Etched Trademark used was a Cloverleaf with the letters G.C.Co. in the leaves. Their main cuttings consisted of Hobstars, Pinwheels and Stars. This Compote measures 7 3/4" tall, 6" in diameter, has a 32 point star cut under-base and a trapped air inverted teardrop in the stem.
There are catalogues available online of their early cuttings/products and the Rakow Research Library of Corning, New York has a 1910-1914 catalogue that I haven't been able to open online.
