I found these vintage eyeglasses at a local thrift store I frequent and have never heard of the manufacturer, Welsh Mfg. Co. On the inside of the arms it reads "Welsh Mfg. Co. 1-10 12K GF" and underneath the top bar it reads "1-10 12K GF" After Welsh Mfg. Co. is a little emblem with an X inside a box except the X is curvy. Does anyone know the history of these? I have found some on some auction sites but no history is given. Thanks!
My great uncle Jim Welsh started Welsh Manufacturing Co. in Providence R.I. in the 1940's after working for Bausch and Laumb. He sold B&L the patent for glasses he designed which would clamp to the bridge of your nose, like the ones in the movie, The Jerk. He used the proceeds to build Welsh Manufacturing and made the welding goggles for Rosey the Riveters, pilots shades for the Army Air Corps and later the the Air Force during Korea and Vietnam. In the seventies the company was sold to Textron. My brother and I are the last two Welsh's left.
