This doll is 10 inches tall. She is wearing a knitted green and white garment. Her body, head and arms feel like they are hard plastic. Her features are hand painted. She has two tufts of hair sticking out of the side if her head. One side has a now in it. It appears there should be another tuft of hair coming out of the top of her head. I think her arms and legs are hinged or tied so they can be moved but I cannot see in clearly and I don't want to damage her.
My great aunt died and these were given to me. She lived in the Chippewa River valley in the heart of Ojibway country. She collected Native American dolls and also had this odd one.
Does anyone know anything about this doll?
This was not made as a Indian rather a African American doll . Many of these were made in Japan in 40's . I can't tell from photo if she is bisque or compo I need to hold her . I have had ones like her and they were painted bisque and they paint was not fired on that is why you see some little missing spots in eye's . On her back you may see marked Japan . Very cute and were novelty dolls . How tall is she ? Like 4-5 inches ?
I am sure it is not bisque so maybe "compo" (is that a real hard plastic?). She is about 9 1/2 or 10 inches tall. I can't get her garment off enough to tell if anything is stamped on her back.
The clothing seems unusual to me. Is this the sort of dress they put on them?
