I found this on Craiglist in Philadelphia. It belonged to a man in his mid sixties. He told me that it belonged to his grandmother.I bought it home, cleaned and oiled it.Its a good place to keep my paper clips and pirates of the carribean tatoos.

That is a very interesting piece.
I'm only guessing here but is it possible that hung on the wall with the end in the bottom of your photo being the top?

Thank you, Petey,Ted,AzTom, & Kerry. This piece definitely wss designed to sit on top of a desk or table as shown in the picture.

I love old wood boxes and I think this tiger oak one is just awesome.
I was having a hard time figuring out the board at the top of the photo as I was thinking this was a flat box. Why was one end different from the other end?
Now I thinking that the top may slant up toward the back like a portable desk or what some call a captain's desk. Would love to see a side shot.

I agree that it is shown up side down in the second picture. The "U" shaped cut outs appear to have been a place to hang hand stamps. I recall seeing similar units at the town clerks house years ago. The town clerk was only open one day a week at the town office. If you needed a car registration, hunting license etc. you went to their house. They had a little cabinet like this. The stamp and corresponding paperwork were on the same shelf. There were no computers and usually not even a typewriter. The form was filled out with a pen then the official stamp applied from an ink pad. Then you took it home with blank forms and your friends filled out the forms. You cut a potato in half and pressed it down on the ink stamp. The potato picked up the stamp image and you could make official copies with a potato stamp. Class is over for today. Enjoy.
