On my way home from the nursery yesterday, i saw these people putting stuff out on the sidewalk to be hauled away to the dump. this chair was amongst the stuff. I spoke to this old woman who had owned it and she said that it had belonged to her mother and she thinks it had been given to her by her employers - Mills College - here in Oakland. Mills College is known for some of the finest architecture and furniture in the West, so it might be a 'treasure'. I'd love to know more. it appears to be made of quarter-sawn oak and the back of it is a very fine grade leather. the seat was reupholstered at some point.
stunning craftmens ship on this chair!!!!
thanks sean68. i agree - wonderful craftsmanship. you can really see it in that acorn/ball thing and the fish scale design.
and it's really solid and very comfortable w/ a real nice, smooth and silent rocking movement.
With the exception of the seat this is a fine looking piece. Amazing what some people will toss away.
Pretty massive piece-- it must weigh a good bit.
Not really in vogue today, but it will come back. I too am amazed at the treasures that end up in the trash.
