i found this buried in the backyard of a friend's house in san francisco a long time ago. he didn't want it so i took it. is it a gravestone / marker or what? it's made of marble and looks like the stones they put at the foot of the grave w/ the initials of the deceased on it.
I don't think so,I have a white stone like this with the same letters on it,I think it's some sort of right-of-way marker.just my 2 cents!
wow gargoylecollector! that's really interesting. where did you find it?
I believe that was the start of the 11th commandment but they decided 10 would get us in enough trouble and decided against it.
Don't be to hasty. It looks like it is soapstone. You may want to do a bit more research. There are those of us who carve and engrave soapstone. It may not be worth a fortune but certainly has a value if it actually is soapstone. I have carved headstones in soapstone and it is the easiest there is to work with. I offered to do one for my mother in law but she insisted she wasn't ready for it. I left room for her on the one I did for my father in law.
it's not soapstone, but marble which is harder and more difficult to carve. leaving it in the ground was not an option. i found some very old mochaware pottery at the same site, so it's probably mid-to-late 1800s.
Sorry I found mine on a rock pile on our farm, but it is most likely white marble. It has been broken off on the bottom, has a flat top, unlike yours, and seems to be more worn(but that could be Indiana weather)
