I found this big, old, iron spring - almost 2 ft tall - on the beach in Alameda the other day. i thought it was kind of cool. i wonder what it was used for? i'll probably use it in a sculpture one of these days.

Looks like the rear coil spring from a car. Probably fell out of a Chevy,LOL!

Looks like a rear coil spring out of an old Chevy half ton pickup I had years ago. Worst thing they ever put under a rear end.
i don't think you can see the scale of this thing. it is almost two ft tall - making it way too big for my half-ton chevy.
That is why you use a spring compression tool to install them. It may not be from a Chevy but it is certainly a coil spring from a vehicle or trailer. Being on the beach it was possibly off a vehicle that towed circus equipment etc. It certainly isn't an antique. Perhaps if you put it in Google images with a clear top end view it would match up. The manner the top end anchored usually mattered more than the bottom where it floated.
i was thinking it may be from a ship. it was found at the edge of the oakland estuary leading into a very busy port. i agree it's not old.
LoL, I picked Chevy because they were one of the early more common cars using these.
This type spring was also used for those sit-on rocky type toys that you see in parks. That said the few of those that I've had were just car springs.
It may have some numbers stamped into it on one end, usually on the side of the first few coils.
