Oh how unique I love it !!!!!!!!!!
I can't tell from the pictures but the seat and side looks to be made of African Padauk wood. It is a very dense wood that is quite easy to turn on a lathe or carve. The wood is getting difficult to buy because of restrictions on cutting exotic hardwoods now. I have some large slabs in my shop. The end grain of the seat in picture 3 appears to show marks from a circular saw. That may be an indication that the seat has been replaced. Regardless of the wood, applying green wood wax to the underside will help stop the splitting. Also apply to any end grain where possible. Green wood wax is a liquid and hazy when it dries but it seals the open pores of the wood. Green wood wax is made for green wood while drying but it will help because humidity changes won't have as drastic effect. If the bench is in a climate controlled place it isn't as important. Very nice piece.
