Re-posted to compare with Warren's vase showing the early Loetz mark on a very simple piece. Mine also has a flat bottom and rim. So much for Loetz pieces always having a polished pontil and rounded rim. F.W.F

This shouldn't surprise anyone, Frank - as Mergl says, "The decoration called Papillon also belongs to the early period of Art Nouveau production in Klostermuehle. The glassworks introduced it as a novelty probably in late 1898 or early 1899... ... The attractive, but technically simple and thus in expensive, Papillon decoration was one of the most popular types of ornamentation made at Loetz. Combined with combed thread and band decoration, it was also a starting point for a number of later types in a higher price class."
So, as popular and common as it was in later years- in 1898, Papillon was brand new, and a novelty - not surprising that a few pieces would have been marked this way.
