I just picked this clock up at a swap meet. I really like the look of it. It has an eagle on top and lions on the side. there is a hand written tag labeling it as an Ingraham, but it looks more like an Ansonia. I believe it is cast iron and brass and all original and unrestored. It is working. Does anyone know the make and model? Is it better to clean up the finish, or leave the tarnishing? Thanks.
Can't find this particular model in my references but the tier top with eagle finial does resemble an Enameled Iron Case Ingraham called the "Signet" from circa 1881. The signet is also illustrated with the Maltese-style hands. You should be able to tell if Ingraham manufactured the clock, or at least the movement, by looking for a manufacturer's stamp in the movement's brass plates. Ingraham often stamped the front plate of their movements (hidden behind the dial). You would have to remove the movement (or at least the hands and dial if possible) to see that area. Without any further information I think there's good reason to believe that it is in Ingraham. As far as the "patina" is concerned, I would just remove the dirt and possibly apply a coat of two of good Carnuba wax to the enamel. Use something non-abrasive like the hand cleaner "Goop" (w/o pumice). It's amazing how much better these clocks look with a simple, thorough cleaning.
