This doll is another pre-Edo era representation. She is a flute player who may have entertained nobles and other social/economically high ranking people. There is also a good chance women such as these may have been courtesans. The hairstyle is not in the shimada style, but in a typical late Heian or early transitional Edo period where long lengths were all the rage. Another marked difference is that her collar is not dipped low like a geisha's at all.
