Another flute player in my roster of dolls. It has been said that before the Edo period, as the transition between one era into another was beginning, Chinese influence found it's way again into the dress and hair of Japanese culture. I can see where the Olive Oyl part of the hairdo looks Chinese influenced. A similar style popular in the Tang dynasty was worn by men and women. Before the Shimada hairstyle and around the time of the Mage hairstyle, loops and long bits of hair with (paper) ribbons and one hairstick was considered the norm. However, in adapting later Tang dynasty influenced hairstyles, Japan did a time warp that would later manifest in the more masculine looking and familiar Shimada.
