Maiko tend to have more colorful and elaborate hair decorations. This is done because due to her acquiring experience that eventually takes her to the next step of being a geisha, the distraction takes away from any flaws or mistakes she may make. It also symbolizes youthful energy and vibrancy. Along with a brightly colored kimono and ankle length obi, their kimono sleeves are long and ornamented heavily. Often, long sleeves are associated with either young women or older unmarried women.
