    Though rare, there are some maiko dolls that have a particular bun style known as the momoware; translating to "split peach". This style is meant to be alluring and innuendous to what it represents. One Japanese seller I deal with told me another theory as to why maiko dolls rarely sport the momoware hairstyle unlike their real life counterparts. Depending on the variant worn by the girl, the split peach hairstyle also signifies that the maiko is undergoing her menstrual cycle hence the spot of red that is it's trademark. Of course, not being Japanese myself, I can only take his theories with a grain of salt......
