Was out hunting for some nice Art Glass recently and came across this solitary Vase in a local Antique Market. The vase was very reasonably priced so it followed me home. I suspected that it would be French and after going through some books and sites on the French internet, I came to the conclusion that it was not Portieux , Vallerysthal or St.Louis but that it was probably by Baccarat.
It has a "Flowing Fountain" rim and upper section in Uranium green Opaline (glows marvelously under a black light) with a lower white Opaline body and a tiny Green Opaline snake biting it's tail near the bottom. It had gilding on many sections, some that is still "all there", but most of the gilding on the white Opaline has worn off from the 150 years of handling. The base is recessed with a rough pontil. It measures 8 3/4" by 4" and it probably had a "brother" at one time as it sat on a far-away "BOURGEOIS" mantel. Baccarat also made similar wares that had snakes as an added decor. If anyone wants to add their opinions on the provenance, I would be more than pleased to accept them, thanks ! RER(BOB)
