I think most of you know that I enjoy glass which is quirky, unusual, & different...& anything that's a touch oddball tends to stand a good chance of winning me over....well, how's this one for a offbeat charmer?
There were a multitude of hand painted milk glass vases produced in the late 19th century, & a huge range of examples are still to be found today, in all shapes & sizes. Most feature highly competent, though fairly pedestrian, painted decoration, most typically of flowers.
This one is something else!
Just a very plain, simple vase form, in an off white to very light grey coloured glass, with a satin finish, it has been decorated with the most wonderful painting of an owl sitting on a tree branch.
The sensitivity & skill clearly evident in this decoration is exceptional. The restrained, autumnal colour palette, the delicate depiction of the owl's feathers, & the watchful expression on its face are magical indeed. Whoever painted this vase truly loved what they were doing, & their passion for their work still speaks though the years - it's a class act in every way.
Thank you to the artist who created this special piece...it makes me smile as much it must have done for you when you painted it.
The vase measures around 15.5 cm tall, 3 cm across the polished top rim, & 4.5 cm across the base, which has a roughly snapped off pontil mark.
Most likely of Bohemian origin, I believe.
adore enamel glass depicting birds
Way Cool. What a Hoot !!.!.!!
Many thanks, kivatinitz!
Thanks also, Kevin! Found this gem in Newtown, one of my favourite haunts...
The perfectly still watchful owl....yet there is motion in the evening dew gathering on the branches and beginning a slow drip .....and the moonlight reflecting off the dew’s moisture.
It just makes me want to be still, watch and listen for the most minute sounds.....maybe a drop of dew falling on a leaf far below.
Too wit to woo.
Thank you so much Patricia, & beautifully said!
Thanks also, Bambus1920!
very beautiful!!!
Thanks so much, Sean!
Oh this is just wonderful!! I love it - what a beautifully enameled owl. My daughter is in love with all things owl, and I would have snatched this up if I found it! :)
Many thanks, Michelle!
You know, I actually thought of your collection with respect to this vase, as you have so many gorgeous enameled pieces. So glad you're enjoying it!
Hey sorry I missed so much stuff lately.
This is so special, I love owls and listen to them most nights here.
This is a stellar bit of enameled glass.
